HOLLY FESTIVAL CRAFT FAIR TO BE NOV. 12 AND 13 AT BCMS
Popular event is benefit for DARE program
The 18th annual Holly Festival Craft Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 12 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13 at Bernard Campbell Middle School, 1201 NE Colbern Road. The popular event is a fundraiser for the R-7 DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. Admission is free.
The Holly Festival will include crafts, gift items, concessions, door prizes, a bake sale and a free child identification program. This is also the first year for the event's decorated Christmas tree feature. The Holly Festival is sponsored by Lee's Summit
CARES.
R-7 CELEBRATES RED RIBBON WEEK
Lee’s Summit R-7 hosted a community kick-off for Red Ribbon Week Oct. 24 at Richardson Elementary School. Red Ribbon Week is a national recognition to promote healthy lifestyles, including avoiding illegal use of alcohol and drugs. In addition to the community kick-off, Lee’s Summit R-7 schools are hosting a number of activities to encourage students to lead healthy lifestyles and to resist the use of drugs and alcohol.
RECEPTION TO HONOR KRISTEN MERRELL, STATE TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Kristen Merrell, a teacher at Lee's Summit Elementary School and Missouri's 2011 Teacher of the Year, will be honored at a community reception scheduled from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Stansberry Leadership Center, 301 NE Tudor Road. The event will include a brief presentation at 5 p.m. as well as refreshments.
Mrs. Merrell was selected R-7 Teacher of the Year last spring and was named Missouri's Teacher of the Year in late August. She was also recognized at a state banquet held Oct. 26 in Jefferson City.
THEATRE STUDENTS TO COLLECT FOR LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES
Theatre students from Lee's Summit High School, Lee's Summit North High School, Lee's Summit West High School and Lee's Summit Community Christian School will join forces to collect canned and dry food goods for local charities as part of Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat, a national community service project through the International Thespian Society.
The students, who will be dressed in costume, will be collecting food donations in neighborhoods Oct. 29 through Oct. 31 with the main effort from 4 to 8 p.m. Halloween evening. All donations will benefit Lee's Summit Social Services and Greenwood Helping Families. Last year, the students from the four schools collected more than 10,000 pounds of food.
LS CARES TO PRESENT PARENTING TEENS WITH LOVE AND LOGIC
Lee's Summit CARES will present its popular Parenting Teens with Love and Logic courses from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays Nov. 15 through Dec. 13 at Pleasant Lea Middle School, 630 SW Persels Road. Included in the course are tips for good communication, setting limits, handling peer issues and influences and much more. Parents are encouraged to bring their youth ages 11 and older to the session on Internet safety that will be facilitated by the Lee's Summit Police Department on Nov. 22.
Cost is $42 per participant, and scholarships are available. There is no cost for previous participants in the teen program. Fundraiser to benefit Chamber's support of R-7 students
A few seats are still remaining for the first Dancing with the Chamber Stars fundraising luncheon, scheduled for Oct. 28. Deadline to purchase tickets is noon today (Oct. 27). The dance competition will help raise funds for the Chamber Education Committee's annual high school scholarship fund. Eight teams will be competing for the top dancing prize with team members collecting pledges. Those attending the luncheon may also vote on their favorite dancing duo during the event. Drumm Farm Golf Club is built over approximately 280 acres of preserved
farmland located in Independence, Missouri. The 7,121 yard, par 72 course
is designed around meandering creeks and rolling fairways. Players will
enjoy the five sets of tees, on this Championship course, to make the course enjoyable
for golfers of all skill levels.
Located adjacent to the Championship course is the 9 hole Executive course. The 1,674 yard, par 30 layout is designed for players of all skill levels with three sets of tees. The Executive course is a great place for beginners to learn the game of golf and an even better place for other players to fine tune their skills.

Shamrock Hills Golf Club, located on the south side of Lee's Summit, Missouri was established in 1961.
Covering 170 acres, the course features challenging holes, including water hazards and rolling hills. The course measures 6,363 yards from the Men's tees with a par of 71 and 5,166 yards from the Women's tees with a par of 73.

The only golf course in America that sits above an active mine.
WinterStone Golf Course is known as the course above the limestone mine. There are many uphill and downhill holes that require strategy. Creeks and twin lakes bring water to seven holes. The course ranges in length from 6,752 yards from the gold tees to 4,976 yards from the blues. At about 3:00 you may hear and feel the rumblings from the underground limestone mine.

December 2011 Market Update
One of the key drivers of homes sales, the employment rate, is beginning to show promising signs of a turnaround. The four-week average for jobless claims, as of November 19, was 394,250, a drop of 3,250 from the previous four weeks, and at the lowest levels since April. Consumer confidence also rose 15 points in the last month, and is now at its highest point since July of this year. Eric Green, Chief Market Economist at TD Securities Inc. said, “The trend remains very constructive. Jobless claims are back below 400,000, which seems to be the pivot point in terms of a strengthening labor market as opposed to a weakening one.”In addition to improving employment conditions, home affordability also improved as interest rates fell further, opening the door for more first-time home buyers who accounted for 34% of the sales in October, an increase from 32% last month and last year. The western United States saw the greatest increase in home sales, which were up 4.4% month to month and up over 15% from last year. A strengthening job market, along with encouraging signs from the housing sector, including a 10% jump in pending sales for October, are strong economic forces. While mortgage lending still remains a challenge, these forces may send a signal to banks to relax lending regulations and allow for a more rapid recovery. This number can be affected by the sale of distressed properties, which typically sell at discounted prices. Distressed properties accounted for 28% of homes sales in October. Interest Rates
Mortgage rates continue to push lower, dropping to 3.98% from 4.23% in October of 2010, offering historic affordability to today’s home buyers. While mortgage lending conditions continue to be a challenge, more and more people are seeing the advantage of buying a home sooner rather than later. Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said, “Home sales have been plodding along at a sub-par level while interest rates are hovering at record lows and there is a pent-up demand from buyers who normally would have entered the market in recent years. We hope this indicates more buyers are taking advantage of the excellent affordability conditions.”

Lee's Summit R-7 students scored above the national and state averages from 2010-2011. They averaged 23.5 on composite, compared to 21.6 and 21.1 for the national average. The composite score was also one of the highest among the Kansas City metropolitan area school districts.

The annual Mayor's Tree Lighting Ceremony will be at Howard Station Park (corner of Third and SE Main). Over 100,000 SPARKLING lights will be lit. There will be free hot chocolate, musical performances and a visit from Santa, Mrs. Claus and his elves! Bring your camera and get pictures with Santa!
